STA THE ORGANIZER

The Society of Automotive Technicians, or Sociedad de Técnicos de Automoción (STA) as it is called, in Spain was founded in 1947 by Wilfredo P. Ricart, who was a designer of Pegaso sports cars.

STA is one of the founders of Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d’Ingénieurs des Techniques de l’Automobile, FISITA, and it is the official representation in Spain. Also, STA is a member of EAEC, European Automobile Engineers Cooperation.

The objective of STA is to stimulate the progress of the automotive industry in relation to the needs of society and to promote the technological progress of that industry.

¿WHAT IS FORMULA
STUDENT?

Formula Student is a competition organized by FISITA. In that competition students of engineering from all over the world compete in the design, development, building and driving a single-seater competition car.

It is an educational project that allows to the students live a real experience and also prepare the engineers for their career. At the level of engineering studies, it would be equivalent to the Dual Training that is being implemented in Vocational Training.

FORMULA STUDENT CONCEPT

An invented automotive company hires a competition team. They have to design, build and drive a car that will be evaluated for its potential, technological innovations, cost and fuel/electricity consumption.

The vehicle is based on the German rules, aiming at standardising the design rules and ensure the security of both the event and the participants.

During the competition, the Formula Student teams are evaluated by judges in two ways: theoretical and practical. The teams have to prove their knowledge and their management skills, in areas such as design, car building and also a business plan presentation

Formula Student promotes the academic excellence in engineering, covering all aspects of automotive industry: research, design, building, testing, developing, marketing, administration and finances. This competition allows students to use their knowledge in a real experience and put it into practice, after so many years of studies.

The teams are used to working under pressure, planning the costs and control various aspects. That is the reason why students have a level of excellence in education and they improve their abilities, knowing what to do in real situations.

One of the main objectives is promote the ability to manage problems that may arise during the competition.

Formula Student and Formula SAE take place in 10 different countries.

WHAT IS FORMULA
STUDENT SPAIN?

In 2010, and for the first time in Spain, STA, in collaboration with public institutions and important automotive companies, organised the first event of Formula Student Spain, providing the opportunity to students from different universities to show the work done during the course, in the famous Barcelona-Catalonia Circuit.

This was the best opportunity for Spanish university teams to take part in one of these competitions sparing long and expensive journeys in other countries.

Thanks to the effort of many people and institutions, Formula Student Spain grew from 11 teams in 2010 to 81 in 2018. Last year our competition rallied 39 fuel vehicles, 39 electric vehicles and 2 driversless from 21 different countries.

And this year, we expect to increase our participation. 2019 represents our #10yearchallenge

IN THE LAST EDITION WE COUNTED ON THE PARTICIPATION OF 21 TEAMS FROM SPANISH UNIVERSITIES
